Sales of Crestor (rosuvastatin), AstraZeneca’s cholesterol-lowering drug, are expected to be dampened further by the latest report showing that it is associated with higher rates of adverse events compared to other statins. The conclusion was drawn after side effects reported to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) during the first year of marketing of four statins–Crestor, Zocor, Pravachol and Lipitor–were analysed by researchers from Tufts University, Massachusetts (Circulation, doi: 10.1161/circulationaha, 105,555482).
* FDA Aug. 12 approved Crestor (rosuvastatin) to lower cholesterol. The long-awaited launch from AstraZeneca will be competing in the class of HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors, or statins, which is dominated by Pfizer’s Lipitor. Pfizer says it has sold almost 21 billion Lipitor tablets since the cholesterol-reducing drug was launched in 1996.
